week in photos

Binky loved the movie, Red Tails about the Tuskegee Airmen that
came out recently.  He saw it with Daddy and couldn't stop thinking about it.
He read some books about them and was hoping to find
some action figures he could play with.  But we couldn't find any.  So
he wrote to George Lucas at Lucasfilm and asked if they had any plans to
make Red Tails action figures.  Two weeks later a package arrived in the mail!
There were no action figures, but a very kind letter explaining that they had no intention of making any
action figures, but they loved getting fan mail and hoped he would enjoy these other movie
products.  Binky was so excited!!  He wears the dog tags all the time!

Binky loves to sit down and copy chinese writing.
He can do it for hours.  We haven't found a language product that he
enjoys yet.  Still looking.  Goose uses Rosetta Stone for French through our Homeschool
Charter, but I don't think Binky is quite ready for that yet.

This is the final project for Goose's Mesopotamia study.
She made a page for each God and Goddess including their name in cuneiform.
Innana, the ancient Sumerian mother Goddess, is her favorite.
She is the protector of grain and the queen of heaven, combining earth and sky.
Now that we are moving on to Egypt, I think a book of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses
would be nice.

Binky is studying the California Gold Rush and this is a flyer to
persuade people to come to California in search of gold
to make their dreams come true.  I love it!
Are you convinced??

This little guy, Sebastian, who we rescued a few months ago is getting bigger and
more curious by the minute!
He fit so well into our family.  The dog and cat love him and he adores them.
They love to chase each other around the house!
How is your week so far?

alone time

I had a couple of hours to myself the other day.
This RARELY happens.
I knew exactly what I wanted to do!

I grabbed my camera and headed straight for my favorite local garden.
I am always at peace as I walk through the trees, flowers and creeks.

There has finally been some rain here by the bay.
We are in desperate need of some!
Spring is here and it only recently started really snowing in the Sierra.

The pollen levels are out of control!
Are they where you live?
Spring is here and Binky is out of his boot and getting stronger in his right leg by the day!
Today we went for a long walk and he was fine!
Tomorrow we resume our morning walks through the neighborhood.
I can't wait!  I love starting the day outside.
Happy Spring!

Happy To Be Back

Well, I am back.  It has been so long since I sat down and visited blog world!
I have missed you!
We have been busy learning, living, healing and baking!
Goose loves to bake!!!  This is her puff pastry with homemade raspberry jam filling.
So delicious!

And last night she made a butter cake with chocolate frosting from scratch!
Binky and I had cake for breakfast!  It is so yummy!!!!!

We visited the zoo last week.
The bats are my favorite!

And this is Maggie.
She is 2 months old!  Isn't she adorable?

This is the USS Iowa.  She is huge!  We were able to go aboard and walk around the bow.
Binky was very impressed.

Goose is studying Mesopotamia right now.  The Hanging Gardens of Babylon intrigued her.
She painted her version of what they might have looked like.
I wouldn't mind living there!

This morning Binky and I went for a walk along the waterfront in search of these little guys.
We were so excited to find this one fairly close to where we could take a photo.
These burrowing owls return each year to this same park in Berkeley.

Since my last post Binky was diagnosed with Kohlers Disease.  It sounds worse than it is.
Basically it means he can't participate in any running, jumping, snowboarding, or skating activities
for at least one more month.  And it has already been 2 months!
As you can imagine, he is going a bit stir-crazy!!!!!!!!!
There are tears now and then when reality hits.  And not just from Binky. Imagine your 9 year old
not able to do any of the the physical activities he loves so much for 3 or 4 months straight!
It took FOREVER to get a diagnosis.   Probably because it is such a rare disease.
The good news is that he will heal.
So for now we are listening to a lot of audio books, playing cards, painting, cooking,
playing with action figures(and buying new ones) and writing.
There are some movies in there too, of course.
Well, like I said, I have missed you and so look forward to finding out what everyone has been up to
in this new year!
Happy 2012!
