"Thirteen Moons on Turtles Back"
Native Americans believe the 13 sections on turtle's shell represent the 13 moons of the year. And each Moon has a name
Moon of Popping Trees, Baby Bear Moon, Maple Sugar Moon, Frog Moon, Budding Moon, Strawberry Moon, Moon When Acorns Appear, Moon of Wild Rice, Moose-Calling Moon, Moon of Falling Leaves, Moon When Deer Drop Their Horns, Moon When Wolves Run Together, And Big Moon.
"The Bright Moon"
It shines in the night and it's quite bright.
It has four phases and they are named
Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous,
Last Quarter and Crescent.
Can you guess what it is?
I will tell you!
It is the Moon, the bright Moon!
The Moon guides the night sky and its companion, Luna.
They shine so bright in the night sky.
It will never fade away.
I will always find the Moon no matter where it is.
It will always be there in the sky at night.
The moon guides the night and it always will!

Regolith covers the surface of the Moon. We even added a "sample" to our books!

We have been working on these books for a while now. We actually took a break from it because the kids were Mooned out! But now we are back in action! And ready to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the first Men on the Moon, which is Monday, July 20th at
02:56:15 Universal Time(which is the precise measure of time used as the basis for all civil and scientific timekeeping thoughout the world) which translates to 10:56:15 pm Eastern Daylight Time. Goose and Binky have really enjoyed making these books. And so have I! We are not finished yet, but the kids are inspired and that is what makes it so much fun! I will post a list of all the great books we've been reading as soon as I can. Lisa over at 5 Orange Potatoes has a great post on Moon lore and illusions here. Did you know NASA is planning to go back to the Moon and build a permanent base for scientific study? Or that the United Nations has an Office for Outer Space Affairs?
What are your kids excited about right now?

  1. This is wonderful! I love the Native American names for the moons:)
We should do more lap books... it's such a great learning tool. We did one on the Civil War.

  2. On Monday we are starting a unit on the solar system and space exploration!

I plan to use the "Race to the Moon" as an introduction to a brief study of the moon-which will lead into study of the solar system--and back to when & why humans wanted to travel to space in the first place!

Benjamin is very excited as we've been watching moon landing videos for weeks now on YouTube! LOL

  3. That looks like such a fun way to learn about the moon. Your kids are learning so much!
My kids are learning about France right now. With the Tour going on, even my husband is interested in all things French at the moment.
